Bryony Worthington is Shadow DECC Minister in the House of Lords, and also a member of the Shadow DeFRA team. She was made a life peer in November 2010.
Bryony is a leading expert on climate change policy and carbon trading. After studying English literature at Queens' College, Cambridge, she joined Operation Raleigh as a fundraiser. In the mid 1990s while working for a conservation charity on new laws for wildlife protection, Bryony became moved involve in climate change issues and by 2000 she had moved to Friends of the Earth. it was there that she set up their highly successful 'Big Ask' campaign, which called for new climate legislation.
To explore if change could be better achieved in other sectors, she moved to Scottish and Southern Energy, one of the UK's largest energy companies where she advised on sustainable energy policy. During this time, she was seconded to DeFRA, where she implemented a public awareness campaign and helped draft the ground-breaking Climate Change Bill. More recently in 2008, she launched Sandbag.org.uk - a not-for-profit campaign group - to help people better understand emissions trading by opening it up to pubic scrutiny.
In 2011, Bryony became the patron of the Weinberg Foundatoin, which she helped to set up to promote safer, cleaner forms of nuclear power. She has written regularly for The Guardian and was a founder member of its Environment Network.
