Maggie Jones

Maggie Jones is Shadow Education Minister in the House of Lords. She was made a life Peer in 2006. 

Maggie’s background is in the trade union movement. From 1977-1978, she worked for the Inland Revenue Staff Federation; before spending a year at the National Union of Bank Employees (1979). Up until 2006, she was active in the National Union of Public Employees (what eventually became Unison), as a regional official, national officer (1989) and Director of Policy and Public Affairs (1995). From 2000 to 2001 she was Chair of the Labour Party. Until recently Maggie was a longstanding members of the Shadow DCMS team in the Lords, leading for us on the arts.

 

Maggie has a proud record of fighting low pay and discrimination at work; a housing campaigner and Chair of Circle 33 Housing Association and the Ombudsman Services: Property. She is also passionate about environmental issues and sits on the Board of WRAP – the recycling and resource efficiency body. When not in the Lords, Maggie lives in Brighton where she relaxes by horse riding and listening to and watching jazz.
